Bored kids surrounded by rad video game systems on CRT displays
These kids didn't even know how good they had it on their pre-internet video game systems.

Starting a new game sucks. I’m not talking about games like Disc Room, in which there’s virtually no barrier to entry; the game downloads in less than five minutes, the story takes 3 seconds to tell and 3 brain cells to comprehend, and the game has you running around, gaming for your life, in seconds.

No, I’m talking about the AAA games with $265M budgets. The games that take hours to download and install, then minutes to load, then hours to get through story exposition and the tutorial (at which point I’m burning reserve brain cells). Keep in mind, this take comes from a 40-year-old dude with more money than free time—when I was 12, starting a new AAA was glorious.

Payoff

Fortunately, the slog is usually worth it. I can think of no better example than the latest God of War game which I put off playing forever, knowing that it was more God of War (which I thought I was done with) inexplicably built into an open world environment (which I also thought I was done with). But the payoff was spectacular.

I hope this newsletter pays off in the same way for all of us.

For me, I was giddy when I thought this idea up, only to sulk when I realized I had no domain, website, newsletter service, SEO, blah, blah, blah; I’m hopeful this endeavor will bring me joy.

And you, dear reader, and you. I hope the barrier of entry is as low as most things Devolver Digital has put out (Disc Room included). I mean, all you have to do is sign up… But I know that in this age of information and email overload, you only have so many brain cells left (or maybe you’re already in the red). So, if you do decide to join me on this journey, thank you.

Gamer’s Inbox

So, what is it? It’s a once or twice weekly newsletter with some hot game deals. Yes, I know you can learn about deals through other outlets, but none of them will couple with my thoughts. This banter is the draw—for now. Eventually, the hope is that people come here for the deals, but stay (groan, don’t do it…you’re gonna do it, aren’t you) for the feels.
